the leaves on the trees
whisper in the wind
branches lifted in prayer
to the goddess of the sky
roots spread underground in prayer
to the goddess of the earth
as above
so below

When I was a kid, I was fascinated with all things outer space–planets, the moon, stars, and sun. Solar eclipses were exciting, and I remember trying to make an eclipse viewer with pieces of cardboard. There’s a total eclipse happening tonight, so in its honor, here are a trio of poems from past posts. They hint at the possibilities and flights of imagination that the heavens inspire in me.
When God was briefing everyone
on the grand design,
I snuck off to the back room
to watch cartoons on T.V.
I caught up with the crowd
when it was time to invade the earth
but by then everyone else
seemed to know the pattern
that I’m still trying to figure out.
I can’t tell when I’m turning a corner
until I reach the intersection,
then I twist my ankle a little.
For every fact that someone is sure about
I have my doubts,
and for every answer I finally get
I can’t help but think
I should already have known.

If Mars formed life, then life on Earth could have been seeded by life on Mars, making every life form on Earth descended from Martians. – Neil Degrasse Tyson
oxygen is all the rage on earth
that is
if you want to live
but on mars
breathing is not as popular
at least not with oxygen
while you’re here on earth though
stay in with the in crowd
breathe the ever loving air

i dip my pen into my liquid core
hoping to find the words
only to find myself drawn even deeper
to the love you leave for me
hot as gravity
i am your molten remains
you the depth of my earth
